Journalist, author Nawa will lead two Assembly Series programs on Afghanistan

Afghan-American journalist and Opium Nation author Fariba Nawa will participate in two WUSTL programs exploring the current and future state of Afghanistan. She will give an Assembly Series talk, “Afghanistan, Heroin and Women,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Umrath Lounge, and lead a panel discussion the following day about what’s next for that country.

KIPP seventh-graders get a taste of college life at Greek Serve: The KIPP Experience

KIPP charter school students are working hard to get in to college. And yet, many never have visited a college campus before. Organized by sorority and fraternity members, “Greek Serve: The KIPP Experience” gave KIPP seventh-graders a look last week at life on the WUSTL campus.

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court needs devil’s advocates, law professor says

Many deplore the vast scope of the National Security Agency sweep of private phone and electronic communications and question the fairness of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court decisions about such activities. President Obama proposed a court spokesperson to advocate for constitutional protection. In a recent Huffington Post piece, Merton Bernstein, JD, professor of law emeritus, argued that’s not sufficient.

Margolis named new head of ophthalmology

Todd P. Margolis, MD, PhD, has been named head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the School of Medicine. The new appointment becomes effective Jan. 1.

Remembering Rita Levi-Montalcini

Members of the WUSTL community will gather at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Ginkgo Room of Olin Library to remember Rita Levi-Montalcini, one of two women from the university who won the Nobel Prize. The event, hosted by the Woman’s Club of Washington University, is free and open to the public.

More workplace safety training sessions scheduled

Interest among WUSTL employees and students in this semester’s workplace safety training sessions has been so high that six more sessions have been added. The one-hour free class focuses on preventing workplace violence and  responding to a shooter on campus.
