Afghan-American journalist and Opium Nation author Fariba Nawa will participate in two WUSTL programs exploring the current and future state of Afghanistan. She will give an Assembly Series talk, “Afghanistan, Heroin and Women,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Umrath Lounge, and lead a panel discussion the following day about what’s next for that country.

KIPP charter school students are working hard to get in to college. And yet, many never have visited a college campus before. Organized by sorority and fraternity members, “Greek Serve: The KIPP Experience” gave KIPP seventh-graders a look last week at life on the WUSTL campus.

Many deplore the vast scope of the National Security Agency sweep of private phone and electronic communications and question the fairness of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court decisions about such activities. President Obama proposed a court spokesperson to advocate for constitutional protection. In a recent Huffington Post piece, Merton Bernstein, JD, professor of law emeritus, argued that’s not sufficient.

Todd P. Margolis, MD, PhD, has been named head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the School of Medicine. The new appointment becomes effective Jan. 1.
